Welcome to the Technical Exchange Meeting (TEM)!

Software complexity increases every day. Long gone are the days when we could look at the log file of some piece of software and try to troubleshoot it. Applications organically become more complex as new features are added. Additionally, the methods we use to build new scalable applications also become complex over time. Distributed Computing, Microservices architectures, to name a few, are powerful methods for modern application development but any software built in such ways is inherently harder to troubleshoot.

Fortunately, most issues in running applications are simple. They are almost obvious after they are discovered and, in some cases, easy to fix. The trick is how to find them; having the right tooling makes all the difference.  Application Performance Management tools help software and operations engineers troubleshoot and monitor software applications. They provide visibility into an application architecture and operating characteristics, expedite error identification and resolution, and enhance application performance and tuning options.

What happened? How can we fix it? How long will we be down? Those are questions that are asked when some issue is discovered that is a result of subtle bugs, transient errors, dependency failures, breaking changes, timeouts, etc. Formally called Root Cause Analysis, it is the process of analyzing an event that had some undesired outcome and necessitates corrective actions. Speed is critical when conducting an RCA due to the possibilities of servers being down, vital functionality being unavailable or some other problem that must be mitigated as soon as possible.

Properly facilitating APM and RCA for an individual can transform a Tier-1 support engineer into a self-sustained, aware, well-equipped resource who can predominantly self-help or know which escalation engineer to involve next. During this technical exchange meeting, we will find out what “properly facilitating” really means in terms of resourcing, time, effort and materials, and over-all cost. See you there!
